When folks talk about analytics, it’s typically limited to on site, standard data that is common throughout a number of vendors. For large organizations with terabytes of data – including customer purchase data, census data, geographic data, social media data, etc – the average analytics platform doesn’t work. Here’s a great conversation between Alteryx and Forrester’s Boris Evelson on the topic: Alteryx combines business intelligence and the ability to connect to large datamarts into what they describe as strategic analytics. Last week, I had a fantastic conversation on the topic … Continue reading

Google’s Bogus URL Shortener Statistics
We had an intriguing session with a client as part of some analytics training and consultation we’re doing with their parent company. As part of their ongoing efforts, they distribute QR Codes, append Google Analytics campaign code, then apply the Google URL shortener, allowing them to accurately measure the response rates of their efforts. This is a solid strategy. Analytics alone can’t provide you with everything you need because of all the applications that distribute links nowadays that don’t append referring data to the request. Analytics knows where you came … Continue reading

I worked with a database marketing company to work on a proprietary index that utilized drive time and distance to rank prospects and it was incredibly successful. Businesses don’t realize how important proximity is to their daily business. I … Continue reading
Talk your IT Department into Firefox
I think I’ve been pretty spoiled in the past when it comes to IT departments. I ran a network at my first job and was the guy with all the toys in the department (aside from my Director at the time, I always bought one for him first). Moving between different jobs in Marketing and Technology has put me on both sides of the IT door so I know how frustrating it is not to have the tools you need. Though it’s more difficult to support, I’m a firm believer … Continue reading
Firefox 3 Review, Robots, Add-ons and Tweaks
It’s the second day with Mozilla Firefox 3 and I’ve already dislodged Safari from my dock. The browser is quite fast (I’m guessing until all my popular add-ons and a few security updates arrive). I believe it’s worth the upgrade and I can wait a few days until the add-ons are up to speed. Usability Improvement on the Button Layout The most noticeable change when you launch FF3 is the larger back button in the Toolbar. Kudos to the interface team on this change. Typical layouts of menu systems in … Continue reading
