It doesn’t matter how much initial education you put into a new engagement, a Search Engine Marketing Villain will pop up when you least expect. I have identified a short list of the Villains that we, at EverEffect, seem to come across when engaging new prospects. Can you relate to any of these? Lack of Goals – Don’t Tell How Much You Want to Spend, Tell Me How Much You Want to Make In every new prospect meeting we ask the question, “What are your business goals?”. And almost every … Continue reading

The ABCs of an Online Presence
Today, I’m speaking at an event called Dominate Your Destiny. The purpose of the event is to empower young business entrepreneurs to take charge of their business. The event is mixed with life lessons as well as business networking and best practices. As an example good friend, Victoria Finch, is a regional credit expert who spoke on understanding your credit rating (which is pretty fascinating) and how to take control of it. I wanted to open up peoples’ eyes to all of the technologies and tips out there on developing … Continue reading
For Businesses, New Media Is NOT Easy
Social media is easy. Search engine optimization is easy. Blogging is easy. Stop saying it. It’s not true. Technology is daunting. Conventional companies struggle with leveraging technology and newer channels to get positive results. Many abandon or avoid it altogether. Online, search and social media is no less daunting. Twitter is simple, right? How hard is it to type 140 characters? It’s not… unless you are tied up at work with a number of other responsibilities, under pressure to deliver results during this recession, and want to blend a great … Continue reading
The Changing Sales Paradigm
The next Techmakers event will be a special one! I’m always thankful for the opportunity to speak and Techmakers provides an audience that’s different. Techmakers are largely technology professionals who bridge the gap between the back-end and the front-end folks. There’s also a nice mix of small and large businesses in attendance at these events. The next event will be at Scotty’s Brewhouse downtown on Tuesday, January 5th at 5:30PM. I hope you can be in attendance! We’ve actually grown to a point where we’re now taking up both privacy … Continue reading
2,000 Posts and We’re Just Getting Started!
The last time I celebrated the growth of this blog was when I surpassed the 1,000 post mark in November of 2007. Here we are at 2,000 posts and the blog is healthy, not wealthy and wise. It’s time to kick it up a notch and I’m going big. Coming soon is a minor rebranding of the site… no… the cheesy Windows 2000 remake isn’t a preview! Some of you may remember when I switched the domain from douglaskarr.com to marketingtechblog.com… that was the first phase in separating the blog … Continue reading
Implementing Amazon S3 for WordPress Blogs
Note: Since writing this, we’ve since migrated to WPEngine with a Content Delivery Network powered By MaxCDN, a much faster CDN than Amazon. Unless you are on a premium, enterprise hosting platform, it’s difficult to get enterprise performance with a CMS like WordPress. Load sharing, backups, redundancy, replication, and content delivery don’t come cheap. Many IT representatives view platforms like WordPress and use them because they’re free. Free is relative, though. Put WordPress on a typical hosting infrastructure and a couple hundred simultaneous users can bring your site to a … Continue reading
