			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The analogy I always use to companies when they ask what the difference is between <a href="http://www.marketingtechblog.com/interactive-marketing/">advertising and marketing</a> is fishing. Advertising is me sticking a worm on the end of a hook and dangling it in front of the fish, hoping they bite. Marketing is the strategy that led me to the lake, the kind of boat, the tackle, the rod, the reel, the line, the hook, the bait, the time of day and the kind of fish that I&#8217;m trying to catch&#8230; as well as how many of them.  Advertising is the event, marketing is the strategy (that often incorporates advertising).</p>
<blockquote><p>Do you know that the first print ad was created in England, and it was for a prayer book? Or that the first official TV commercial was in 1941 for Bulova watches? Bet ya didn’t know that the first keyword ad was “golf”! The evolution of advertising has experienced milestones such as the printing press and television which impacted advertising format immensely. However, the internet has revolutionized advertising perhaps the most, and we believe that In-Text advertising is the next generation of advertising. So it was important to review where advertising began in order to better understand we are headed!

What most sites, including <a href="http://www.marketingtechblog.com">The Marketing Technology Blog</a>, don&#8217;t do well is feeding <em>listeners</em>, though.</p>
<h3>The 3 Styles of Learning</h3>
<ol>
<li><strong>Visual</strong> &#8211; most learners are visual.  They like to read and especially learn when that content is supported by charts and images.</li>
<li><strong>Auditory</strong> &#8211; there&#8217;s a segment of the population that can&#8217;t learn through visuals alone&#8230; they need to actually <strong>hear</strong> the information to understand it.  Tone of voice and inflection are very important.</li>
<li><strong>Kinesthetic</strong> &#8211; some people don&#8217;t learn through reading or hearing&#8230; they learn through interaction.  Although a blog enables this type of communication, there are additional opportunities to reinforce through polls, questionnaires, slideshows and other applications.</li>
</ol>
<p>As a company, it&#8217;s imperative that your online marketing efforts <em>feed</em> these three styles of learning.  Repetition of the content won&#8217;t every feed the auditory learner &#8211; you must provide a means for them to listen to the content to fully comprehend it.  This is why so many cheesy landing pages on the web incorporate video, text and some kind of interaction.  </p>
<p>They aren&#8217;t simply trying to cover all their bases&#8230; they&#8217;re prepared for the auditory learner who jumps directly to the video or the kinesthetic learner who jumps directly to the interaction.  I was speaking to Brett Evans yesterday and was re-energized to write this post as he talked about all the great advancements coming to <a href="http://www.cantaloupe.tv/forms/registerwebinar" rel="external nofollow">Cantaloupe</a> and their product <a href="http://www.cantaloupe.tv/forms/requestdemo" rel="external nofollow">Backlight</a>.</p>

<p>What did you learn from each medium? Quite a difference!</p>
<p>As a result of me studying the 3 styles of learning and speaking to Brett, you&#8217;re going to see more video coming to The Marketing Technology Blog!  We want to feed all the different styles of learning here and continue to grow our reach and impact our readers (and listeners&#8230; and viewers!).  </p>
<p>As a curious follow-up question, do you recommend podcasts?  I&#8217;ve never been attracted to them (since I&#8217;m a visual learner) but may make an effort if the demand is high!  Perhaps I can do video and split off the audio into podcasts.</p>

<p>Google Mobile had a <a href="http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2007/11/new-magical-blue-circle-on-your-map.html" rel="external nofollow">video on their blog</a> today that looks very much like a Common Craft production.</p>

<p>If it&#8217;s not a Common Craft production, Google definitely has some explaining to do!
