    The fact that everyone can easily share visual content today is probably playing a large role in this.  Most cell phones today have great cameras and can instantly share photos with their social connections.  The attention span of users is probably a big factor too.  People are more likely to notice a picture than text, because they don’t want to take the actual time to read the text.
