Did you know that the word “wiki” means “quick” in Hawaiian? For all you folks that have read Wikinomics, you understand the value in a collaborative project. Wikipedia is a fantastic example of this - thousands of people adding to the content of an online Encyclopedia that is the largest collection on Earth.

Unfortunately for contributors, Wikipedia added ‘nofollow’ to any external links on their pages a while back. I still believe that was a terrible move on their part… the very people that wrote and created the content no longer get any value in Search Engines outside of people clicking directly on the links in the article. So if you took an incredible amount of time in developing an article on Wikipedia and it becomes very popular, you don’t reap the full benefits of having written it.

How the Million Dollar Wiki is different:

This is changing with a new Wiki, though! The Million Dollar Wiki has started and is quickly gaining momentum. The difference with the Million Dollar Wiki is:

  1. You buy the rights to the page for $100.
  2. You write the page however you would like, with no requirement of approval.
  3. You can put advertising on the page.
  4. You can sell the page at any time for any price!

Million Dollar Wiki

The Million Dollar Wiki is in its infancy right now and I believe it’s one of those projects that HAS to take off. The price of entry is low and, over time, it will begin attracting more Search Engine traffic. The collective traffic of a single site like that is very powerful and will result in better placement. The opportunity to add links to your business and drive traffic to your main site through Million Dollar Wiki is a huge one. Unlike PayPerClick, this is a rate that will never go up based on how many people click-through.

Additionally, if you get in now you’ll have the opportunity to buy some keywords and flip them when the site really takes off.

My recommendation? Buy NOW and get in early while the phrases are available. I’ve purchased Corporate Blogging, Email Marketing, and Web Analytics and added enough content that it’s already getting the attention of Search Engines.

How can you check for a keyword or keyphrase on Million Dollar Wiki?

This is pretty simple, simply search for a page on the Million Dollar Wiki! If it’s available, it will result in a Purchase Link.

A $5 Discount is Available

I’ve spoken with Graham, the founder of the Million Dollar Wiki and he’s added a coupon code “douglaskarr” that you can add in the checkout that will get you $5 off each page purchase.

That’s the beauty of something like Wikipedia: People contribute — in many cases, large amounts of time and energy — for the sake of building something useful, being part of something great. They don’t do it for money or recognition or attention.

I saw this Million-Dollar Wiki the other day, after a previous post of yours mentioned it. Honestly, I almost became nauseous. The content on your pages is actually rather good — so thank you for that — but the site as a whole seemed overly commercialized. Like an infomercial rather than, say, NewsHour.

Wikipedia has the opposite affect: I know there’s lots of heated debate about content, what’s right and what’s not, and so on, but the end product honestly makes me feel better about people and their desire to contribute to something that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Hi Mike,

I agree with you that many of the people that are writing their pages on MillionDollarWiki are doing a very poor job of providing content that will be found and appreciated. That’s simply a waste of money for that specific purchaser, though!

The value is in the pages that are well-written and index well! Let’s say that 10% of the pages index well - that’s currently about 40 pages that will bring attention. In a year, if there are 4,000 pages sold (I suspect more), then there will be 400 pages. 40,000 will be 4,000 pages… etc.

I also agree on Wikipedia - the people that edit and contribute to those pages are great! I’m one of them :). The problem is still a human one - take for example the Email Marketing page. There are a local lack of resources on that page to actually execute on your Email Marketing!

If I were to edit that page and put some top Email Service Providers, I can almost guarantee that the changes would almost be immediately reversed because of the fear of ‘being commercial’. That’s to the detriment of the reader, though.

It’s why I think this is such a fantastic opportunity!

Great comment. Thanks!
Doug

Doug

Even if pages start to rank in search engines… with stuff like this it’s bound to generate a feeling of animosity and general “user self filtering” (i.e. if I ever see a link to an article in MDW… I don’t click it). On top of that… by naming it MillionDollarWiki… it associates itself with the likes of the other MillionDollar… blah pages that are long lived in memory but short lived in usefulness. While I can see a short term gain and return on an investment… I don’t see a long term usefulness to the web. I would have liked it better if you had approached the post about it more objectively about the possible marketing avenue and didn’t come off sounding overly hyped like you do.

Graydon,

I appreciate your comment (and wish it would expand! There’s a bug with the commenting plugin that I use that causes this intermittently.)

I recognize you stating that I’m ‘overhyping’ the MillionDollarWiki. You’re absolutely right!!! The more hype I create on this wiki, the more people have to gain who have a great page. It’s absolutely self-interest… if you buy a page and it becomes a great resource, then it will lift my page up as well. That’s the point of my post and of the Wiki.

Cheers!
Doug

I bought a Million Dollar Wiki page. I actually own the Marketing Page and so far, I’ve already made my $100 back. It’s pretty neat, there is full support for every issue you could possibly have and, well I’m not the only one who has made my $100 back. In fact, I now have a coupon code so people can get $5 off of their page purchases. The code is: k5webworks, If you want to buy a page, just punch this code in on the checkout page and you just saved 5 bucks. Anyway, I belive MDW has now reached over 380 pages sold. Graham is a pretty smart guy in my book.

MDW has pushed over the 420 page mark! I purchased the “Podcast” page and am already seeing the benefits of such a small investment.

Also, I conducted an interview with the 21-year-old founder Graham Langdon that you might find interesting. You can stream the show on http://www.jobacle.com

Thanks!

Great job with the pages you own.

The content on MDW isn’t great at the moment, but as MDW gets more attention, more and more people will improve that to share the traffic generated by the site. There are people, like Doug, who put time into their page and help MDW get a bit of traffic. As the site grows, there will be more and more incentive to make your page better. If you place only an ad or throw a bunch of links up, you’ll never get on the main page, categories or mentioned in Grahams blog. However, if you put in some time to make a useful page - you’ll definitely gain some great exposure from the site. I can only see good things for the Million Dollar Idea.

I followed this over at JohnChow where he very quicly recoupped the cost of his wiki pages purchased (I think it was “make money online”).

I’m not sure that the milliondollarwiki is going to get anywhere near the traffic at wikipedia… I’m not sure I’m up for buying the page for $100…
