I thoroughly enjoyed reading this blog, Doug. I learn a lot by reading most of your daily links (does this say something about my being too lazy to find this stuff for myself?), but it's always nice to hear another's perspective. Especially someone whose opinion I've grown to respect. Keep up the good work!

Thanks Josh! The fear, of course, is alienation of people. I hope I don't with this post - I just want folks to understand my 'quirks' better by supplying some background on how I came to them.

As well, I ultimately hope that it leads to conversation. Many people may not return to my blog because of what I posted (I hope not, but I'm being honest with myself). But for every 3 people that left, I made 1 person really think about it, I'm happy with that.

I don't expect people to agree with me, I just hope it provokes thought. I'm an equal opportunity 'ranter' as well, taking some shots at both sides.

:)

I'm not sure I'm ready to share my views nationally... believe it or not, I view my blog as a more personal conversation between friends. If the time is right and the audience is there - I'll gladly share it, though.

Thanks for sharing this - one thing I appreciate about blogs is the opportunity to learn about who the writer is - something that's difficult or unlikely in magazines or other tradition media. Reading about others' thoughtful, nuanced, and complex personal perspectives is important. Perhaps you could record a version of this (the Fred and Ray story, maybe?) for the NPR program This I believe.

That was a long one! I suppose one of the nice things about blogging is that, much like a journal, it helps us to speak about things that bother us and get them off our chest.

I think this post is probably as deep as I'd like to take any post - but I still want to be transparent to folks who read my blog so that, even if you disagree with me, you still trust me.

I believe Ray did have a will, but it was easily usurped by the family when it went to court. It all happened very swiftly.

Phew! That was a long one--we'll have to get together and talk about all those issues!
I'm curious--why didn't Ray have a will made? I have never understood this issue--if you make out a will you can bequeath to whomever. Everyone should have a will.
