My daughter asked me yesterday what the difference was between Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day. Veteran’s Day is a day of appreciation for the men and women who have served or are serving to defend the United States of America. Memorial day is a day of solemn thanks for those men and women who have paid with their lives.

In this time in our nation, there is a certain ugliness in politics that views our Armed Forces as a branch of our elected government. Since many do not agree or even loath the administration, some allow those negative impressions to pass on to our volunteer armed forces. We should not allow that to happen. The armed forces of the United States aren’t the property of our elected officials, they are our country’s defense… and in a democratic nation the country is the people.

Our armed forces are a reflection of our society. There are veterans from all ethnicities, religions, and classes. As you think about them, remember that some did not vote for the government who has sent them in harm’s way. They didn’t mind, though, because they volunteered to serve and protect the United States of America. They did what so many have not, could not, or would not.

On this day, please remember the sacrifices of those who paid the ultimate price. They served and died for you… for America… for freedom. The least you can do is say, “Thanks”, and pray for peace so another person’s father, mother, son, daughter, husband, wife, brother or sister need not pay for our continued freedom with their lives.

On a side note, it’s not often that you find the surname “Karr” anywhere, but I did find one of our fallen comrades’ name is Michael Greg Karr, Jr. I have no idea if he is some distant relative, but I’ll say a prayer for Michael’s family today irregardless.

Hi Douglas,
I agree with your comments.
I recently received a very comforting Blessing from God certificate from http://www.godsblessingsforyou.com
The site donates a portion of its income to charities, including the armed forces.

Keep up the good work.

[...] Day differs from Memorial Day and is often confused with it. Memorial Day is in honor of the men and women who gave their lives on behalf of the country. [...]
