I’ve been reading in the news and seeing on television that there is some restraint in the media industry in using the word ‘terrorist’. Other words are being used, such as bombers, fighters, and Islamic Militants. To report the news accurately, one must match the word to the goal of the person or person(s) in question. Bomber is symbolic of a designated target or targeted audience. Fighter is synonymous of someone battling with another. And Islamic Militants brings to mind an Islamic who is armed and ready to do battle.
A terrorist is none of these. A terrorist has no physical target. Their goal is not to knock down a building or kill a particular human being. Their ultimate goal is only one thing. By killing or destroying, they seek to create havoc, disarray, distrust, destabilize, for the ultimate goal of terror. They do not know their victims, nor do they care. They are not boldly trying to improve their life through the destruction of others - this is evidenced by their choice to sacrifice their own lives.
Some might say that the action of the terrorist is but a reaction to our provocation. I disagree. A good person, though provoked, will never take the life of another as a debt for provocation. It is nothing short of evil.
Ultimately, the question is how do you stop someone who is willing to sacrifice their own life to take yours. It seems to me that that only leaves two choices, to kill or to be killed. I am not sure what my God wants me to do when faced with this situation. I hope that I never have to find out. Our government IS faced with this situation, though. The acts of 9/11 brought it to life and we are now living the hell of a war with an enemy who has nothing to lose and who’s only goal is our death and destruction.
The blood spilled in Afghanistan and Iraq should never go unnoticed. Our goal is not to take their land, their riches, or their oil - we can do without all of it. The fact is that we are killing those who would have us killed, and we are doing it on their turf. It’s a hellish situation that no civilized country should face, but I believe our government has no choice. It’s kill or be killed.
Call them what they are, terrorists.
